A22. Integrated Business Planning
IBP
What is “Integrated Business Planning” (IBP)?
It is a business planning process that extends the principles of sales and operations planning throughout the value chain that helps bridge the gap between strategy and execution.
What is “Sales and Operations Planning” (S&OP)?
It is a process to better match supply with demand (find a balance) by developing strategic plans that help management direct the business and gain a competitive advantage.
This process brings together all the plans for the business: sales, marketing, development, manufacturing, sourcing and financial.
What are the similarities between IBP and S&OP? Mention and describe them.
Monthly process: results are reviewed each month with the objective of growing the business and minimizing costs.
Cross-functional approach: coordinating people, tasks and time
Driven by business strategy: provides forecasting accuracy and decision support to meet organizational objectives
Tactical planning: all parties collaborate with each other to reach a consensus
What are the differences between IBP and S&OP? Mention and describe them.
IBP: starts with the organization's financial forecast as a tool to move the organization forward.
S&OP: originates in the supply chain and its main objective is to adjust production and sales.
How does the IBP process work? Describe in detail.
Companies have an annual budget cycle based on their strategic plans and objectives. They project over the next 6 to 24 months where expected revenues and costs will go; most likely there will be gaps between the annual budgeted and monthly updated figures. The IBP allows you to take action to address the gaps by integrating a financial view.
What are the challenges of IBP?
Communication problems: Supply chain people often talk about units, products, and product families, while finance people often talk about money, currencies, and so on. That also causes the two functional areas to evaluate each other differently with the KPIs they use.
Which are the most common difficulties/problems when implementing IBP? Mention them and provide examples.
Lack of commitment in some of the necessary departments
Information not available
Use of inadequate software for information presentation.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of IBP?
Advantage: Guarantees the participation of all major departments in planning and decision making, and information on results is constantly updated.
Disadvantage: If the people involved do not have the necessary knowledge in all areas, the process will be slower. Updated software is required for maximum utilization.
What is the importance of IBP nowadays?
It is important because when making a strategic plan of action in which the objectives of the company and each department are considered, confusions in the tasks are minimized and when integrating people, a collaborative environment is created.
I agree. It is important to have a strategy and involve all members of the organization, each area must be informed of their work so that they are efficient and work as a team.
